When our founder, Kazuho first developed TwitterFox, Twitter was in it's early stages and Kazuho never dreamed it would become so popular. Then came the iphone and the sister app of TwitterFox was developed, TwitterFon. The name was a play on "Twitter-Phone".
As we began considering launching new apps on more platforms, we decided a unified name would be necessary. Especially considering our plans included creating apps that would sync with one another, using a single name for the whole family of applications seemed appropriate.
"Echo" was suggested by one of our Twitter followers, and we liked it a lot because it was reminiscent of the sync concept. We added "Fon" to keep some semblance of our old name and then it was set, Echofon.
TwitterFox and TwitterFon have worked as separate applications until now. As Echofon, these applications will talk to one another, unread tweets stay in sync between the applications. Imagine using Echofon while browsing the Web with Firefox, you read some tweets before running off to lunch. At lunch you are waiting for your food and check Echofon on your iPhone, because the apps sync with one another, you will be shown the tweet where you left off at home.

Also you can now receive push notifications on your iPhone when you are mentioned in a tweet, or receive a direct message. These new features are available when you use Echofon Pro on your iPhone, we are working on bringing them to the free version of Echofon for iPhone as well.

So now all our applications are called Echofon, more specifically:
TwitterFon is now Echofon for iPhone
TwitterFon Pro is now Echofon Pro for iPhone
TwitterFox is now Echofon for Firefox

If i click on Echofon in iTunes Store it shows up Twitterfon 2.0.3
Awesome. Every theme I use will now have to be updated to reflect this pointless change. Huzzah for unwise PR moves.
We are in the process of updating the description and it should change soon. Thanks for your patience!
Utterly brilliant, this is the very thing I've suggested to other developers, and was (apparently) ignored!
Thank you for being the best. :D Seriously, awesome.
I think TwitterFox much more intuitive.. It's a very good name and it will be lost.. EchoFox would be a better choice.. In my humble opinion EchoFon don't sounds any good.
Good lucky anyway..
When will Echofon for Firefox become available? The addons site doesn't list it, yet, and it's not on the TwitterFox site...
I've looked EVERYWHERE to try to find how to set up push notifications in Echofon Pro, and others are having trouble, too. Instructions are needed. Put instructions on this website, in the iTunes description, and link to the instructions on Twitter. I've looked in the official Settings app (it does report that I have 2.1 Pro, if you're wondering) and in Echofon, but there's no mention of push anywhere.
Boy this looks ugly now.
Updated description should appear on App Store anytime now. We have no way of knowing when our apps are approved, and we only find out when they have already been approved. Then we change the product description manually, which takes several hours to go live. Unfortunately, now we are in that "several hours". Meanwhile, you can read about it on our website http://www.echofon.com Sorry for your inconvenience!
Muero, the instructions are now up on this page, look under the heading 'iphone setup': http://echofon.com/push-sync-guide.html
EchoFon? Wasn't that the name of a hair dryer?
The sync seems not to work for more than one installations of Echofon for Firefox.
Fine, but I MUCH prefer the old icon. The new one looks like QuickTime.
As I think geWAPpnet was getting at...
If we can sync between a Firefox add-in install and an iPhone app, can we sync between add-in installs in multiple Firefox instances? (E.g., my Firefox-at-work and my Firefox-at-home?)
geWAPpnet, thogek,
As long as you have an iPhone app, multiple Firefox apps can be synced (but not without an iPhone app).
So I have two installations of Echofon for Firefox which are both configured to be synched with the same account (= Echofon for iPhone). Both Firefox installations are running at the same time and the reading state of the Tweets are different. Which one is actually synched to the iPhone? My tests don't show a logical pattern.
I noticed the Web Site link from the iTunes store is pointing to "echonfon.com" not "echofon.com".
I don't have an iPhone so I don't get any of the new TwitterFox features. I understand the name change because the two apps sync with each other. But I have to say that the old names were much easier to understand for people who don't know of the existence.
Oh, and if I post something from Echofon Firefox, Twitter marks it as posted from TwitterFon, so that's gotta be updated.
Although I don't have an iPhone I think the whole idea of syncing your iPhone with your desktop is great. The name isn't the best choice imho though. People who don't know of the existince don't think 'hey, that's a nice twitter app/add-on'. I really don't understand the 'fon' part for something that is a Firefox add-on and will be an OS X app anyway.
Oh, and why does Twitter say that I posted via TwitterFon while I really posted via Echofon Firefox?
Now all we need is flickr video integration support as a video backend and Facebook integration for updating your status and this is THE perfect app.
Still the best in my book!
Also, what is the general response time on the push? Meaning if someone @ mentions me how quickly does Echofon's servers push that out?
Will you be accepting beta testers for the Mac app?
Hi all,
>Which one is actually synched to the iPhone?
Both are synced. Sync happens every 10-15 minutes, so there could be some lag.
>"echofon.com"
Oops. Fixed. Thank you!
>posted from TwitterFon
We are waiting for the change to be deployed. Should be soon.
>what is the general response time on the push?
10-15 minutes.
Echofon for firefox not working at all as expected. I can log in perfectly and see tweets but my second account has the tweets from my first account all rolled into it. Doesn't matter which account I choose eventually all the tweets from both all get rolled in to one view!
What about those of us who don't have an iPhone, don't want one, and don't care? I just want to tweet from Firefox!
I am also a Firefox-only user (no iPhone) using the client at home and at work, so I also see no benefit to the new changes. It seems like a simple REST interface could help TwitterFox (sorry, habit!) to sync as well, no?
We'll look into the multiple account contamination issue.
We are working on the sync between multiple Firefox extensions and hope to be able to add the feature in the near future.
The name of the good app is not so important, but it can't said about its design — please, add new themes for firefox app.
Bad name choice, it sounds old and awkward. And TwitterFox users are feeling abducted, thanks for letting us know beforehand...
It's just me or seems that the Echofon's Software License Agreement (https://addons.mozilla.org/pt-BR/firefox/addons/policy/0/5081/58912?src=addondetail) is a little more complicated than Twitterfox? Specially the "Transmission of Data" part.
The icon does look like the Quicktime icon. But eh, whatever.
However, I really would like a filtering mechanism. I.e., filter out tweets by someone or containing certain words/hashtags for a period of time. The first statusbar twitter app that has that gets my permanent install.
TaQ
We had to modify the license agreement to accommodate the sync feature.
King Rat
We'll think about it. Thanks for your suggestion.
I don't want my Twitterfox tweets to say they come from Echofon. I want nothing to do with iPhone apps.
>ghoti
All our apps are now called Echofon, including TwitterFox. We think of "fon" as "fun", not as "phone".
Another big thing which is now makin me miss Twitterfox and simply hate Echofon is that it doesn't show me all the tweets recieved it the number is above 20. I have noticing it shows only 20 tweets even if I have recieved 80 or 199. Please see to that, if this continues I will have to look for alternative software which i wud absolutely hate to do :x
>Prasannajeet
Did you try pressing the down arrow key while you are on Echofon for Firefox?
New name: Meh. I can live with it.
New icon: Terrible. Bland circle now gets lost with all the other icons in the status bar and doesn't visually have a damn thing to do with Twitter.
Suggestion: Short URLs by default cwhen you click the "Insert current tab's URL" button
bluntly said-- i dont like the new name. i have no association to mac or iphone whatsoever and it is just sad to have a forced iphone/mac feel for people who dont even use either of them.
as i made my own twitterfox style, i have no problem to overwrite all of the 'new' echofon design and i'm back to good old twitterfox, a twitter icon in statusbar and no mention of 'echofon' anywhere. thanks a lot for being opensource.
The latest version has a bug in combination with the #. When one has text such has "I am writing something about #keyword, also I am bored" - when I now klick on "#keyword" the Twitter Search searches for "#keyword,". Happens with other characters like ":" too.
