Echofon for Mac now available in beta

We have added Echofon for Mac to our Echofon family. You can now enjoy the simple and clean beauty of Echofon on your Mac desktop.

Echofon for Mac:
  • is a fully native Mac application
  • is easy to use, just like other Echofon applications
  • supports sync with Echofon Pro for iPhone. You are only shown tweets you haven’t read yet, no matter where you read them
Currently the sync works only with the pro version of Echofon for iPhone, but we are planning to make it available in the free version of Echofon for iPhone in the near future. Since Echofon (formerly known as TwitterFon and TwitterFox) has been downloaded more than five million times to date, we have to be extra careful in rolling out the sync feature so that our sync server works as smoothly as possible.

Echofon for Mac is free while in beta. The full release and pricing will be announced later this year. You can download beta version from http://echofon.com/twitter/mac/

For the instruction to enable sync, please go to http://echofon.com/push-sync-guide.html

We hope you will enjoy Echofon for Mac. Please let us know what you think!

I'm excited about trying this out, as Tweetie for Mac keeps crashing on me. This would complete my trifecta, EchoFon Pro for iPhone, Firefox plugin for work, and now EchoFon Mac for work.

Nice! Think a lot of people have been waiting for this! ALready checked it out and have a few comments:
- Where do you want to receive comments? I looked through the app and these and the echofon pages and no place to submit feedback?
- Only thing I am missing right now in the application is some sort of "alternating row color", that's all, keep up the good work!

The DMG file is corrupt. Is saying "Error -4960" when trying to mount.

Please send a mention to @echofon for feedback. Thanks!

I just spent some time setting up and playing with Echofon for Mac.

Some observations.
1. No groups. Both Seesmic and Nambu supports user lists/groups.
2. Twitter gateway error meant I could not tweet.
3. It doesn't crash the way Nambu does.
4. I prefer the native app approach and don't care the Adobe AIR approach of Seesmic. But, Seesmic is awesome at generating publicity.

Brilliant, down to the ticmarks in the scroll bar. I'll admit I thought it was a bug at first, then it dawned on me as I scrolled through... woah, this is going to be an incredible app. :D A few things need work, but that's exactly what beta's are for. I've already switched over from Tweetie (switched on the iPhone months ago!), and am looking forward to the final release.

I'm posting suggestions and comments via @Echofon.

Noticed that when you are at the top tweet you first need to pres the arrow down and then up to mark them as read. The way Nambu handles this works better for me.

You should definitely mention it only works with Leopard and above. Very disappointed that all of these native Twitter apps dont work on 10.4. I have 10.6 at home but alot of Mac oriented work places are still on 10.4

Very well done—love the drawer, who cares if they're supposedly out of style. Two minor requests: customizable font size and removal of the space underneath the tweet input box. (You could still include the remaining-character counter; just put it above the size box at the right).

Especially impressed on how Mac-like you made it for your first Mac app. (One small hint: on the Mac, buttons are supposed to activate when you release them, not when you press them; you should fix the segmented controls at the top of the window to behave like that.)

hee hee hee! Looks like a clone of Echofon Firefox.

Chika said...

>Twitter gateway error

This is most likely due to an error on Twitter's server unfortunately.

>ticmarks in the scroll bar

Great you noticed. Have you tried the highlights also? Preferences>Highlights.

>it only works with Leopard and above

We added the description. Thanks!

A few more things: 1: Needs keyboard selection & reply keyboard shortcut. Twitterrific's cmd-2 is in use, so is cmd-R. Maybe cmd-shift-2?

2. Use an I-beam cursor while hovering over text.

Otherwise, still happy.

Nice work so far!

Some feedback:

Saved searches would be cool, particularly if they synced with your Twitter account and updated in the same way as the other timelines.

Multiple accounts would be good if they were more obvious (I couldn't find the second account I added until clicking about and guessing).
Also, it would be better if all accounts updated themselves at the same time rather than, as it seems, only the currently visible account updates.

Finally, I don't know if I'm just being picky, but I have been using Tweetie for Mac and it seems like the scroll is a lot smoother on Tweetie. Yeah, I am being picky, but it's all part of the experience!

Thanks for such a good job to start with though!

Phil

Very nice start however I dont see a tab for FAVORITES. How am supposed to find tweets I marked as favorite? Maybe I'm missing something...
Also for some reason syncing seems odd. I was under teh impression, for example, when you read all new tweets on iPhone that when going later to Mac app the latest tweet that is new since reading off iPhone would be the next tweet I see in Mac app. This doesnt appear to be case. How does this work exactly? An explanation would be great (and, by extension, maybe a FAQ too!)
I didnt even notice the dashes in scroll bar until someone here pointed it out. My guess is by clicking on them it takes you directly to a DM or @ reply from a friend? Again some clarification would be well appreciated!
Great work tho, looking forward to some updates to make it even more user friendly

Echofon for Mac is much more than I expected for a beta release. Very stable, lots of nice features which I've grown accustomed to in other apps, including the keyboard shortcut to show/hide it (so I can add it to a secondary mouse button).

The ability to hit the spacebar to dismiss a picture preview is a very nice touch as well. I've often tried to dismiss an image the same way in Tweetie because that frame looks like QuickLook, only to have it not work. Good catch, good call. It's a minor thing, but minor things make the difference.

My one request would echo Phil above. I handle multiple personal and business Twitter accounts. I need to be able to see when any accounts have new tweets, not just the one I had previously selected.

Good luck and more power!

How much is the full version?

The overall impression is really good and I love it!

However, the sync function seems not working for me and the color of the unread post is a bit difficult to identify.

By the way, can we select where to put the uploaded pics?

Love it so far! Unless I’m missing something, I’d like to see a few tweaks that would make the experience from the iPhone app to the desktop app more seamless:

First, I would love it if the desktop app had the option to scroll down to the first of the unread tweets — iPhone app does this already.

Second, it might be just me but because I have to scroll down to find the first of the unread tweets, the light-blue colour used to highlight them is too light for my Macbook to easily discern. The room I use it in has relatively low lighting and the light-blue looks pretty much white to me.

Third, is quicker/better syncing. Sometimes I’ll check EchoFon on my iPod Touch while I’m out then later when I’m at home, I still have many tweets marked unread that I’ve already read.

All that being said, EchoFon os still me preferred way to tweet.
Thanks for a mighty slick app.

It currently supports Twitpic only.

Thanks for the input. We'll work on them.

Awesome initial effort. I am using it consistently, and I really like it :)

Q1- How do I view my Favorites?

Q2- Will you be offering the killer address book that you have on the iphone?

Q3- Will I be able to choose url shorteners, and use my service account? (I use j.mp anyway, but I don't think it's autolinked t o my account via my twitter name, is it?)

Q4- I want to be able to choose to use (via @) instead of RT. Will you add this preference?

Q5- Support! Are you going to offer a getsatsfaction.com or some forums, or is all support via blog and twitter?

A couple more comments relating to the new text sizing feature, and one bug:

1) if you've adjusted the text size ("Make Text Bigger/Smaller"), then change the size in Preferences > General, the adjustments remain. This can be a bit confusing; personally I'm not sure whether having 2 different font size adjustments is warranted. You could just make the "Make Text Bigger/Smaller" options persist, then remove the preference and "Actual Text Size" entirely.

2) The text size change does not affect the input box. It should.

3) The "Messages" item in the View menu is disabled for me, when I have messages to read.

tiffygrl said...

I love it so far! A few things I wish it had though:

1. Can it jump to the first unread tweet, just like the iPhone app?
2. Can you add color themes like the iPhone app has? The default colors are too light for me.
3. I protect my tweets, so users have to be approved before they can follow me. As it stands now, I have to log into the twitter website to see and approve my follow requests. Is there a way to make it so I can do that right from the app?
4. Can we get trending topics on the app?

Hi,
i've been using Echofon for Mac for a week or two now, really enjoying it! For a beta, it sure looks like a very complete product :)
Usability is mostly very good, and it's also very stable (i think the app has only crashed maybe one time, while i have it open all the time).

Some suggestions for the application:
* Firefox/Safari-like shortcuts for switching between tabs would be handy, e.g. Cmd-Left / Cmd-Right.
* Also, 'Messages' (Cmd-3) seems to be disabled for unknown reasons
* When clicking on hyperlinks it would be nice if they would open in the browser that's in my current Space, i might have several open browser windows in all my Spaces
* Allow cloning of accounts to keep settings intact
* A suggest feature with users when typing in @replies would be very handy
* I don't get a confirmation when unfollowing somebody
* Is there any way to sync between two copies of Mac Echofon?

I would also suggest opening a forum or something, so beta users of Echofon/Mac can exchange experiences on the application more easily than by comments on a blog post :)

Also, why can't i do copy-paste or many other shortcuts in this comment textarea?

huskyr said...

In addition, it also seems that resizing the Echofon window is pretty CPU-intensive and makes the application go very slow.

Downloaded Echofon desktop app couple of days ago. It's awesome! Very smooth interface. I also really love the url-shortener. The only things that are missing as far as i'm concerned are: the possibility to view two accounts with their messages, mentions en tweets seperately and the option to show retweets with (via @username) as a suffix to the retweeted message. By the way guys, it's really user unfriendly to only allow comments from a profile. I haven't got any of the following profiles-accounts. I think you're missing out on a whole lot of feedback this way.

The Big Easy said...

These persistent 504 gateway errors are NOT due to a Twitter problem. I can sit there and refresh Twitter's web site and still receive 504 errors, which I never received when using Tweetie for the Mac. You guys need to investigate and fix this pronto or I am ditching this product.

Just add Flickr and you're winner ...

I agree with what others have said... this def needs a retweet function.

Two sugestions! please a ubuntu version ( ubuntu has more than 10 millions users and there is not a real good client for linux) the best option is to use a adobe air aplication (terrible solution) or echofon on firefox!

please think about that!

and for echofon in firefox, you could make the icon of echofon green if you have any reply or DM so you can know if a twitt is directed to you!

Can you create a vesion which supports both twitter and friendfeed?

Nice app !!!

I would to use Echofon as "mouseless" as possible, for example, I want to navigate through the tweets just using the keyboard and the tweet could be highlighted ...

Other "feature request" is the possibility of saving searches and update this searches such the others tabs ...

b.pwned said...

Please add an option or something to ease the use of multiple accounts. Maybe like Tweetie, showing an icon for each account with a badge when something noteworthy happens.

Nicholas said...

It would be nice if link text were draggable/copyable. This should not only affect straight URLs, but anything else that's blue: e.g. usernames should be associated with a link to the Twitter user page, hashtags with a search page, etc.

BTW, thank you *so* much for the "shorten" button which appears to shorten your tweet by abbreviating URL(s). The way it only appears when useful is very beautifully done.

I really wish there was a "in reply to" link in the interface. I miss this feature present in ALL the other Twitter clients

skylar said...

The beta is amazing. I've been using it for the past week and I'm really impressed that you guys have created such a fantastic client in such a short amount of time since Echofon Pro (iPhone). Ever since I started using the iPhone client I've been waiting for a better desktop client - I just didn't expect you guys to deliver on beta. Congrats!

Since this is a beta, I'm assuming some features are still in progress. However, there are two key features missing to serve as a full-fledged desktop client replacement:

1) Update all accounts constantly. Being a multi-account client means helping me monitor all my Twitter accounts simultaneously. The interface for multiple accounts is not bad, but I need to be notified if the is new relevant activity on another account.

2) bit.ly account support. Of course, URL shortening is not enough. Shortened URL accounts need to correspond to my account for link tracking. Moreover, some twitter accounts correspond to different bit.ly accounts (personal vs. work, etc.) so each twitter account will need to related to a specific shortener account.

Keep up the awesome work. Can't wait for 1.0!

I like this as a great first start. But I'd like to see the ability to retweet and DM someone upfront-I shouldn't have to go to the slide out window to DM someone, nor have to read about how to RT-that should be obvious to the user, which it isn't right now.

Also, syncing just doesn't seem to work, unless there's a great latency involved.

Nice start, though. Thanks.
